The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County’s Run AWAY 5K raises awareness of recycling and solid waste issues while raising funds for the reuse nonprofit, Resource Depot.
On Sunday, April 2, 2023, at 7:30 a.m., individuals and families are invited to the SWA Greenway Trail System for a trail run and walk. Participants can explore cabbage palms, cypress hammocks, marshes, and lush pine flat woods, with glimpses of Grassy Waters Preserve and Renewable Energy Park as they witness industry meeting nature.
All pre-registered participants will receive a commemorative race medal and race shirt. Awards will be given to the best times for male and female runners in various age categories. Those who aren’t a fan of mornings can register for the Sleep-In Virtual 5K and receive the same swag as those who ran or walked in person.
Registration is online:
- Race Day Registration: $40
- Children 10 and under: $15
- Sleep-in Virtual Run AWAY 5K: $25
Immediately following the SWA Run AWAY 5K, all are welcome to enjoy staff-guided tours of the SWA's award-winning Renewable Energy Facility 2 and LEED Platinum Education Center. By exploring these facilities, Palm Beach County residents and visitors will learn where their trash ends up and how it’s disposed.
Run AWAY 5K sponsors include Resource Depot and Grassy Water’s Preserve. Proceeds from the run benefit the nonprofit Resource Depot, an organization that has turned waste into wonder for nearly 25 years. They inspire creativity, conservation and community engagement through reuse.
About the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County
The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA or Authority) is a Dependent Special District that was created by the Florida Legislature in 1975. Since then, the SWA has developed an award-winning integrated solid waste management system to handle the county’s waste and recyclables. We call ourselves AWAY: whether you throw it, recycle it or flush it AWAY, we put your waste to work. Each year, we:
- Process almost 90,000 tons of recyclables
- Burn approximately 1.8 million tons of trash generate electricity at renewable energy facilities
- Produce enough electricity to power approximately 90,000 homes
- Recycle more than 150,000 tons of wastewater treatment residuals (sludge from flushes) into an environmentally-friendly fertilizer amendment
- Safely dispose of more than 4.2 million pounds of home hazards
- Collect rainwater from the roofs of Renewable Energy Facility 2 and store it in a 2-million-gallon cistern, which is used as part of the energy-making process
