No matter what their circumstances might be, it is important for children to maintain a healthy and physically active lifestyle to the best of their ability. There are several local programs that provide a safe, encouraging environment of athletic competition for children with intellectual and physical disabilities:
Special Olympics:
Founded in 1968, the Special Olympics’ mission statement outlines its purpose to “provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community."
The Special Olympics Palm Beach County has been active since 1973 and is one of the largest programs of its kind in the state of Florida. Fall games include bowling, softball, power lifting, and gymnastics. The summer games feature track & field, bocce, cycling, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and a special motor activities training program. There are also tournaments in the fields of aquatics, basketball, equestrian, golf, ice skating, alpine skiing, and sailing.
Local Young Athletes Programs:
The Special Olympics Young Athletes Program is part of Palm Beach County’s therapeutic recreation department and is specially designed as a sports skill development program for young children, ages 2 to 7, with intellectual disabilities. The Young Athletes program provides a variety of physical activities such as coordination basic motor skills, balance, running, and catching as well as sports play. The flexibility of the program allows family members, teachers, and volunteers to work with each child.
