Research shows playing a musical instrument can help boost your child's academic performance in the classroom. When learning to play an instrument, your child is exposed to rhythm and counting that can help improve his/her understanding of academic subjects, particularly the concepts presented in mathematics. Music can also improve your child's study skills, attention to detail and ability to memorize and repeat important facts.
In addition to enhancing learning in the classroom, playing an instrument increases self-esteem, teaches discipline, and relieves stress. When your child plays an instrument of choice, whether beginner or expert, he experiences the sensation of doing something entertaining for self and others. As he learns additional skills that allow him to play well, his self-esteem will increase as he discovers that he is able to reproduce musical selections on his instrument.
Research is now proving what Nancy and Marshall Benjamin knew in 1960 when they established The Benjamin School.
Music has always played a large role in the lives of students at Benjamin. Beginning with Benjamin’s Early Childhood program, the joy of music is discovered through age-appropriate traditional children's songs, dances, and basic body movements. Auditory, visual, and kinesthetic music activities reach all learning styles. In grades 1-3 the music curriculum continues to use a multitude of strategies and methods to capture all learners. Students participate in a variety of school performances and learn new and traditional songs with corresponding listening activities accentuating melodic, rhythmic, instrumental, and modal points of interest. Students are introduced to the formal aspect of reading and writing music notes as well as note values. There is a strong focus on vocal music in grades 4-6 as students learn many new songs as well as related music appreciation selections that transport them to various time periods and cultures. Students reinforce their skills with the study of solfege tones, part singing, and singing in other languages. Students in grades 4 through 6 play an instrument in the band with opportunities to perform throughout the year.
The Benjamin School offers a strings program to students in kindergarten through grade 12, providing the opportunity for students to advance their playing abilities through ensemble experience, individual and small group lessons. This gives students the opportunity to pursue additional performing experiences outside the classroom setting. Students have the opportunity to study a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to popular, depending on the ensemble and solo/small-group literature programmed. The strings program emphasizes the development of technical/playing skills, basic music history and theory and offers students the time and instruction to develop effective technique on their chosen instrument and to deepen their musical knowledge.
