Seagull Academy for Independent Living, or SAIL, is a free non-profit public charter school serving grades 6 through 12 and beyond for ESE students with significant intellectual disabilities and learning challenges. Since 2002, SAIL has provided a safe, appropriate, and nurturing learning environment that can be customized to meet student needs. Seagull Academy employs an array of curricula to create targeted programs for each student with a focus on advancement in academic as well as life skills, social skills, and job skills.
Each classroom at SAIL employs innovative teaching methods that allow students to learn through hands-on, manipulative activities. The maximum ratio in each classroom is 1 staff member for every 7 students to allow for the individualized learning environment that makes the Seagull difference. Our curriculum incorporates the basics of traditional academics into a broad-based program of practical skills.
Nationally known curriculum programs include Unique Learning System, Study Island, Life Centered Career Education, iReady, and Education.com. Teachers track mastery of goals for academic, personal/social skills, independent living skills, and occupational skills. The goal for all students at SAIL is to acquire transferable skills that lead to independence and employment when they complete school.
In addition to academics, SAIL students have access to Vocational Training, Job Coaching, Training in Independent Living Skills, Self-Determination, and Social/Personal Skills, Music and Art, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Field Trips/Extra-Curricular Activities, Positive Reinforcement, Behavioral and Family Support Services, and Parent Trainings.
